MAINE GREENS TO HOLD STATE CONVENTION MAY 18
The Maine Green Independent Party will hold its annual State Convention on May 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Log Cabin,
196 Main Street, in Yarmouth. Agenda items include introductions of local candidates, presidential candidate speakers, Green of the Year and other awards. Catering will be provided. A $20.00 p.person sliding scale registration fee applies.
The MGIP looks forward to sending a strong delegation to the National Green Party Convention in Chicago in July, a successful election year for candidates running for local and state offices, and electing a presidential candidate that will grow the party nationally.
Candidates for the Green Party of the United States 2008 presidential nomination:
. Jesse Johnson - www.jesse08.org
. Cynthia McKinney - www.runcynthiarun.org
. Kent Mesplay - www.mesplay.org
. Kat Swift - www.voteswift.org
Jane Meisenbach, chair of the MGIP Board said, "We are looking forward to a lively convention. Jesse Johnson, Kent Mesplay annd Kat Swift will be speaking at the convention in the afternoon. Bruce Gagnon will be the spokesperson for the Cynthia McKinney campaign. Maine is a critical state in determining the Green presidential candidate. After California, Maine has the largest number of delegates to the convention...44 in all. This state convention will determine the apportionment of votes to the Chicago convention in July and thus be a key state in selecting the Green Party candidate for president."
The Maine Green Independent Party is running a strong number of candidates for the Maine state legislature, with three candidates for State Senate (which has 35 seats) and ten candidates for State House of Representatives (151 seats).
The Maine Green Independent Party is the largest Green Party in the US in terms of percentage of the electorate, with 3% of Maine voters registered Green.
In the MGIP caucuses held earlier this year, Cynthia McKinney took about 80% of the votes. Greens who did not have the opportunity to attend the caucuses will have another opportunity to vote at the Convention.
