Common Ground Climate Ride / Solidarity with People's Climate March in NYC

climate_ride.jpg

Maine Green Independent Party chair, Asher Platts will be biking from Portland, all the way to the Common Ground Country Fair this September 18th, and then will be camping out and volunteering on the 19th, 20th, and 21st before riding back on the 22nd.

Since biking is always more fun with friends, I'm inviting people to join him!
He is also looking for Green Party members who live along the way to stop by and visit with, and take photos with!

We will be leaving for this 200 mile round trip on Wednesday the 17th at 11:30-noon from the steps of Portland City Hall before making the first leg of the trip to Brunswick. Please come out for your lunch break to wish our participants well!

So it's coming up soon! This is the first multi-day bike trip that I've been on. What sorts of things should I be sure to take, and what sorts of things should I be sure to leave behind? Also, is there anybody who is traveling with me from Portland all the way to Common Ground? Is there any way that we can divide some supplies up among us?

This map I feel less confident about because, like I said, I got really turned around by unlabeled roads, inaccurate maps, and long-winded, confusing directions from the locals. Its my best guess of the route I took. Beautiful, but rollercoasteristic riding until you get there.

Second day. First thing in the morning in Lisbon Falls, I had breakfast at Dr. Mikes Madness Cafe and stocked up on jerky at Maurice Bonneau's Sausage Kitchen. I spent most of the day on the Kennebec River Rail Trail. Camped at Green Valley Campground in Vassalboro. That was a crazy scene -- mobs of wild, screaming children in front of a community bonfire and blaring music. I was too tired to partake in the festivities. But each site -- even the tent sites -- had electric hookups, so I gratefully charged my phone.

Here's roughly the first day of the route. I took the long way through Freeport and Brunswick because it was gorgeous and well worth it. I popped a tire on Lewiston Road (which is a horrible road to ride on, wouldn't suggest it) and camped on a tributary to the Androscoggin in a right-of-way on the townline with Lisbon.

When John and I did this a number of years ago and my legs turned to jelly! I broke it up into a three day bike-camp trip last year and I'm thinking of doing the same this year. Will you post a map of your route? I might join for the last leg of it.

I'll meet you at the train depot in unity ( I will have already been on site) and bike to the fairgrounds with you! ( as long as it's before Friday that is)
